How To Deal With A Person Suffering From Depression

In today’s world, we see that the number of people suffering from depression has increased significantly. People are getting aware of what is depression, but do we know how to deal with a person who is suffering from depression?

The main key is to understand its cause. We may list a number of reasons that may lead to depression, but the main cause is ‘Insecurity’.

The world is getting more competitive by the day, and everyone needs to battle beyond their capabilities to survive. From a child to an adult, we all are competing to be better than the other. A child securing 90% in its boards is also insecure, as there are several others who will score higher and get first preference at the best schools and colleges.

Everyone wants to be on top. What we forget is that only a single person may be at the top, but what we must also remember is that those who are below, are equally competent and it is a mere chance that the other person is at the top. We all are unique and are good at something or the other. Our aim must be to compete with ourselves, to be better than what we were yesterday. We need to discover what we are good at. ‘Do your best’ should be the mantra. If a fish is asked to climb a tree and is judged on its capability to climb a tree, it will always believe itself to be dumb.

The best medicine for depression is - to make the person feel secure, make them believe that they are doing their best and we are proud of them. Help the person see what all they have achieved is worthwhile.

People lose confidence in themselves when they are depressed. This is why we should always compliment people for anything good they have done. It’s not hard, is it?

They may behave in a particular manner, don’t judge by what they are doing, instead, go deep, and try to reason why they are doing this. We need to have patience, as the person is already going through a number of conflicting emotions. We need to make them feel we are there for them, no matter what. Although, it is extremely difficult not to get perturbed, but that is what makes us a better person. Perseverance is the key.

So, don’t keep anything in your heart. Speak out if you are hurt, compliment others and accept when others compliment you, love yourself and accept what you have achieved is best for you. If one door closes, God will always open the next one for you and life goes on, no matter what.
