Chapter 9: Ideal Movies and Songs

Many films in which Rajesh Khanna was the appropriate choice, but unfortunately it was offered to some other stars like Sanjeev Kumar for Anamika and Uljhan. The character of Sanjeev Kumar in both the movies perfectly suited Rajesh Khanna, but unluckily he wasn’t approached. Withal, song of Anamika ‘Meri bheegi si palko mein’ and Uljhan’s number ‘Apne jeevan ki uljhan ko’ could have shot on Kaka and he would have put life in it. Then Shakti Samanta’s Amanush, the role played by Uttam Kumar was a perfect choice for Khanna and a heart-touching song ‘Dil aisa kisi ne Mera toda’. If this song had been picturised on Rajesh Khanna, he could have made the audience cry. In fact, Amanush was initially offered to Rajesh Khanna and he liked the script, but due to burden of too many assignments he wanted Shakti Samant to delay Amanush for a year which Shakti refused and signed Uttam Kumar, who had already worked for the same subject in Bengali which was a success. Both the version of Amanush had Sharmila Tagore as Uttam Kumar co-star.

Mili, was also one such movie which went to Amitabh Bachchan, who was liked and loved in action movies. Likewise the songs of the film were also suitable for Rajesh Khanna like ‘Badi Sooni Sooni Hai Zindagi’. Hrishikesh Mukherji with whom Rajesh Khanna delivered many hits movies like Bawarchi, Namak Haram and Anand for which Khanna charged a petty amount surprisingly wasn’t considered for the film. The only flop of Rajesh Khanna and Hrishikesh Mukherjee was Naukri.

Gulzar’s Kinara was a perfect movie for Rajesh Khanna and the song ‘O maji re apna kinara’ also suited to Khanna, but Jeetendra was cast.

One more important movie was Majboor, another Amitabh Bachchan starrer which had a scope for Rajesh Khanna, though Big B had performed excellently. The brain tumor pain sequence which Amitabh did, one can guess how Rajesh Khanna would perform and the song “Kabhi Sochta Hoon Ki Mein Kuch Kahoon’ seemed to be written and sung for only Rajesh Khanna.

The other song from the movie was Chor Machcaye Shor’s; ‘Ghungroo ki tarah bajta hi raha hoon mein’ was rendered in Rajesh Khanna style, but was picturised on Shashi Kapoor. A super hit track from Jawani Deewani’s ‘Jaa ne jaa’ was also an eye pleasing if it would have been shot on Rajesh Khanna lieu Randhir Kapoor. No one could match the romantic eye expression of Kaka due to his charming face and sweet smile. Though Industry had handsome fine romantic heroes like Dev Anand, Sanjay Khan, Jeetendra and Shashi Kapoor, but Rajesh Khanna was Rajesh Khanna. When he entered film industry he sidelined all the star-actors and became a one man show in 70’s.

A team of Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar and R D Burman has entertained music lovers with umpteen chartbuster songs in numerous movies and till their last breath they worked together. In their long career graph Kishore Kumar has sung 92 songs and R D Burman has scored music for 40 movies in Kaka’s movies.

Manmohan Desai’s Aa Gale Lag Jaa was also a film which was best for Rajesh Khanna, but Shashi Kapoor was cast for the same, though Sharmila Tagore was the leading lady. The film’s hit songs were also an ideal choice for Kaka specially ‘Tera mujhse hai pehle ka naata koi’ and ‘Wada nahin chhodoge tum mera saath’ could be the major attraction if Rajesh Khanna would have performed with Sharmiloa Tagore.

Yaarana of Amitabh was also one such film which had songs appropriate for Rajesh Khanna’s style and image especially a song ‘Bhole o bhole’ and Tera jaisa yaar kahan. A song from College Girl’ pyar maanga hai tumhi se’ a solo in the voice of Kishore Kumar, melodious number could be picturised on Kaka.

Jawani Deewani’s racy number ‘Jana ne Jaa’ and other duet of Bhanwar movie ‘Rang le aayenge ‘’ was an ideal track for Rajesh Khanna, but unfortunately it was filmed on Randhir Kapoor.

The melancholy song from the film Bade Dilwala ‘Kisi baat pe kisi se mein khafa hoon’, shot on Rishi Kapoor, best suited to Rajesh Khanna and if one hearkens, it immediately reminds Rajesh Khanna. One more song on the philosophy of life was from Bad Dilwala, shot on Rishi Kapoor was an ideal choice for Khanna.
