Chapter 10: Presented and Produced Movies

The first movie Rajesh Khanna presented was Badnam Farishte and subsequently was Sachaa Jhutha, Mehboob Ki Mehndi and Roti. Mehboob Ki Mehndi initially didn’t open well, but later on picked up and finally ended as semi hit. The major reason for the film’s success was its songs which were all were very popular. Initially, Mehboob Ki Mehendi was released at Novelty and after some time it was re-released at Mumbai’s Minerva, where it got an overwhelming response.

Sachaa Jhutha and Roti were also Kaka’s presentation as Manmohan Desai’s first choice was Shatrughan Sinha for Roti, but is said that distributors demanded to cast Rajesh Khanna as he was the King of box office at that time and Desai was stranded. Ultimately, Kaka got the movie. For the leading lady, Desai wanted to sign Dimple opposite Khanna, but things didn’t work out so Mumtaz was cast opposite Khanna as both shared a good chemistry on screen.

In late 80’s Rajesh Khanna was planning to produce a movie titled Aansoo, but nothing happened further and later on he made Alag Alag, but the film flopped badly, however the songs were hit. Actually, Shakti Samanta wanted Rajesh Khanna to play Shashi Kapoor’s character and in main lead his choice was Rishi Kapoor, but Kaka wanted to play the leading role. After Alag Alag, Rajesh Khanna produced Jai Shiv Shanker with Jeetendra, Chunky Pandey, Sangeeta Bijlani, Poonam Dhillon and Dimple who was paired with Rajesh Khanna for the first time, but somehow the film bungled to see the light of the day.

Rajesh Khanna had helped many film producers in their difficult days like Yash Chopra who wanted to start his own production, but wasn’t getting financers. Rajesh Khanna who knew him since Ittefaq days agreed to work in Yash Chopra’s debut movie Daag: A Poem of Love and Manmohan Desai who strived to make Roti with Shatrughan Sinha, but his distributors demanded Rajesh Khanna and finally Shatrughan was out of the film. Rajesh Khanna also worked in R K Banner for Rishi Kapoor’s debut as a director in Aa Ab Laut Chale. Moreover, Rajesh Khanna also did Riyasat with new producers, though he was not in a condition to work.
