Chapter 8: Losing Films

Several stories were rotating in the market in different ways about Kaka loosing big banner movies on account of his busy schedule and unpunctuality.

Some of Rajesh Khanna films initially were flops like Raaz, Aakhri Khat, Aurat and Baharon Ke Sapne, but they were well made films and some had good songs, but foozled. After achieving the status of superstardom, he could have avoided films which were not only flops, but had mar his image and those were Goraa, Maha Chor, Tinku, Jaanwar, Chalta Purza, Bandalbaaz, Aaina, Khudai, Bhola Bhala, Do Dilon Ke Khel Mein, Pyaar Zindagi Hai and Wafaa: A Deadly Love Story which offered nothing for him.

Vice-versa, he left some of the best movies like Dharmatma which Feroz Khan had offered Kaka opposite Hema Malini and Khan was suppose to play the character of Danny, but Khanna wanted Khan to stay merely behind the camera which forced Khan to replace him.

The other biggie was Man Mohan Desai’s Parwarish. Rajesh Khanna agreed to do the film on one condition that he would play Amitabh’s role, so Desai had to caste Vinod Khanna for the movie.

The third movie was Souten Ki Beti for which Saawan Kumar desired to cast Kaka, but later on Kumar removed Khanna because he was wanted to picturised a solo song ‘Kaun Sunega Kisko Sunaye’’ on him, sung by Kishore Kumar, instead Sumeet Sehgal for which Saawan Kumar disagreed. Saawan Kumar explained Khanna that it is a part of story and it suits Sumeet’s character, but Khanna was adamant, consequently he was out of the film and it went to Jeetendra. Actually, Rajesh Khanna was right as the song was ideal for him, but Saawan Kumar had also his own vision.

Dev Anand wanted Kaka to be a part of his film Swami Dada, but Khanna refused because he didn’t like the role.

Narendra Bedi who directed Rajesh Khanna in Bandhan and Maha Chor wanted to cast him in a film Bebus which was to be produced by him, but due to date problems, Bedi signed Sanjeev Kumar, but couldn’t continue to work after some reels, due to Sanjeev Kumar’s untimely death.

In Kala Sona also Narendra Bedi desired to cast Rajesh Khanna, but somehow things didn’t work and Feroz Khan came on the board.

The other hit movie was showman Raj Kapoor’s Satyam Shivam Sundaram for which Rajesh Khanna was the ideal choice, but it also slipped from Kaka’s hand, though he loved to work with Raj Kapoor.

For Mr. India it is said that Shekhar Kapoor’s first choice was Kaka, but Khanna refused the project and suggested to try a newcomer. Finally, Anil Kapoor did the title role.

Rajesh Khanna didn’t bothered for leaving the above mentioned hit movies, but one movie for which had regret was Amanush. Rajesh Khanna loved the subject of Amanush, but he wanted Shakti Samant to wait for a year as his diary was full of dates, so unwillingly Shakti Samant had to cast alternative hero Uttam Kumar who was also ideal for that subject. Amanush was a super hit and songs of the movie were also very popular especially ‘Dil aisa kisi ne mera toda’, which suited Khanna perfectly.
