Motivate Your Budding Kid-Authors to Write Better

Kids can be authors too!

Well, it’s a wonder to watch how the little minds work. But what’s more interesting to see is the influence of their writing on themselves, in terms of confidence!

Encouraging your child to develop strong writing skills at a young age can have a positive impact on their writing and make it more enjoyable.

Writing is an expedition that will make your child more self-aware. So, help them explore the idea of being authors.

Here are some suggestions to encourage your kids, to write better and with confidence.

Let them write what they want

Let your children write whatever they want. If you tell them to write only original stories, they might lose their joy and confidence. No matter what category they choose, they are still learning the basics and growing towards being better writers.

Show your kids you take writing seriously

Gift your kids attractive journals, paired with some nice-looking pens. Get them books about their favourite writers or writing. Look for young writers’ conferences that they can participate in and benefit from. Looking out for books at the library or browsing the internet for writing workshops show a young writer that you believe their passion is worth an investment of time and effort.

Appreciate your child as a writer

Read your kid’s work with pride and pleasure and motivate them to write more! The deepest impact you can have on young writers is when you encourage their talent. If they offer their writings to you to read, do so with great pride and pleasure. If they want suggestions, provide them, but always keep the tone upbeat.

Explore some writing styles

Inspire your child to keep a list of ideas and things that interest them. This will uplift their imagination and give them topics to delve into once they are ready to start penning them down. Help them pay special attention to authors they enjoy and guide them to speculate on the techniques they use to engage and entertain. Children need to reflect on what they want to communicate to others.

Begin small

Encourage your child to find ways to get published locally. For instance, they might start by writing letters to the editor of any local newspaper or would even prefer writing books for younger students. Offer to print out copies of your kid’s manuscript and distribute them at school or to friends. It is exciting for a young writer to see their work ‘in print’ and to get feedback from readers.

Consider participating them in writing competitions

Once your child has started to write and begins to develop confidence in their work, you may suggest that they enter a competition. At times, community organizations may hold contests; the librarian may be able to direct you to them.

Any good writer can enter into any field they like. So, discuss your child’s writing with care, if it is something your child takes seriously. Whether it’s two pieces of paper stapled together or a hand-drawn hardcover, your kids will love the opportunity to read their books to others.
