Chapter 24: Last Release Riyasat

Rajesh Khanna’s debut movie was Raaz, but Aakhri Khat was his released first. Co-incidentally, Rajesh Khanna’s first and last movie alphabet begins from R, Raaz and Riyasat. Riyasat, a replica of English super hit Hollywood film ‘The God Father’ on which numerable films has been made like Zulm Ki Hukumat, Dharmatma and others. Earlier, actor-producer-director Feroz Khan’s Dharmatma on the same subject was very successful movie and initially Khan wanted to cast Rajesh Khanna in ‘Dharmatma’ opposite Hema Malini, but Kaka had turned down the offer. In 2011, producer Vijay Sirohi and Diwaker Singhal who were fans of Rajesh Khanna, signed him for ‘Riyasat’ which was a poor copy of ‘The God Father’ as the producers were new and had a tight budget. The film was directed by Ashok Tyagi.

In the beginning from January to September, 2011, Rajesh Khanna completed the shooting but Ashok Tyagi wanted to shoot some more scenes on Kaka, but couldn’t do so as Khanna’s health was deteriorating day by day.

In 2012, due to his demise some portions and dubbing was left, so through technique and technology, film requirement were fulfilled. A master of dialogue delivery, Rajesh Khanna couldn’t even deliver 3 dialogues energetically, due to his health issues. For some of Kaka’s pending scenes, Khanna’s body double was used and his dialogues were also dubbed by dubbing artists which definitely affected the film. Ashok Tyagi wanted to shoot some more scenes on Kaka, but couldn’t shoot as Kaka’s health was deteriorating day by day.

Riyasat could have been made on a grand scale according to its subject, but the producers were new who had a very limited budget. It was their first production and being Rajesh Khanna’s fan, they requested Rajesh Khanna to do the film and he agreed though he was unwell.

Raza Murad who plays an important role in the movie had revealed that Khanna couldn’t lift his leg to climb staircase while shooting as his condition was deteriorating day by day. However, he co-operated as long as he could.

The producers wanted to release Riyasat in 2013 on Kaka’s birthday, but bungled. Then on his first death anniversary they planned, but again various problems occurred and ultimately Riyasat came frontal in 2014. It was a last movie of the first and finest superstar of Bollywood.
