5: The Adventure Begins

Once again, the Six Plus One Gang assembled under the giant mango tree. It was 07:30 in the morning. Igashu, Mayuka and Kiana – all carried carefully packed backpacks.

Igashu’s mother, who helped her husband in village matters, thoughtfully packed a portable GPS and a magnetic compass in Igashu’s bag.

Igashu’s father handed him a Nepali Khukri knife. He said, “Son, this knife has served me well. Use it wisely.”

Kiana’s mother prepared herbal medicines from plants and roots. The pills, powders, and ointments were for fever, upset stomach, snake bites, and minor cuts and bruises. “Kiana, I have written instructions for all the medicines in this bag. Use it carefully’” she said, placing the herbal medicine bag in Kiana’s backpack.

Mayuka’s mother was a teacher at the village school. She selected the correct maps, which gave details of rivers, canals, forests, bridges, and roads, along with other important information. “You are the oldest in the gang. Use these maps sensibly to take the easiest route,” she said.

Excitement was in the air. Nevaeh had thoughtfully made small Fox-tail orchid garlands for Igashu, Mayuka, Kiana, and Zino.

“Aww! That’s very sweet of you, Nevaeh,” said Mayuka.

“And also, very clever of you, Nevaeh, to have used our state flower for the garlands,” said Kiana.

The two little boys, Cyan and Ahren, were busy whispering instructions in Zino’s ears.

“I want you to take good care of the girls. Make sure you lead them through safe passages,” whispered Cyan to Zino.

“You have to take my place and protect the girls. Use your strong horns and legs to protect them from danger,” whispered Ahren.

Zino nodded vigorously and leapt in the air, ready to take on the unseen dangers.

Igashu strapped his portable GPS, magnetic compass, and khukri to his waist belt.

Cyan, Nevaeh, and Ahren exchanged hugs with Igashu, Mayuka, Kiana, and Zino and wished them good luck.

“I will pray for your safety every day until your return,” said little Nevaeh with folded hands.

They set off in a single file, Igashu in the lead, followed by Kiana, Mayuka, and Zino.
