Chapter 21: Set of Directors

In 70’s and 80’s each and every director wanted to sign Rajesh Khanna as he was a goldmine for producers and distributors. He had a line of 15 successful movies including two multi-starrers like Maryada-Raj Kumar and Andaz-Shammi Kapoor.

He did regularly films with Shakti Samanta, J Om Prakash and Hrishikesh Mukherjee and worked with almost all the leading film akers of that period such as Chetan Anand, Nasir Hussain, Manmohan Desai, B. R. Chopra, Yash Chopra, Narendra Bedi, Jumbo, Dulal Guha, Ramesh Sippy, Asit Sen, H.S Rawail, Raj Khosla, Sultan Ahmed, Basu Chatterji, J.Om Prakash, Mehmood, Gulzar, Anil Ganguly, Vijay Anand, Surendra Mohan, Saawan Kumar Tak,, Bharati Raja, Brij Sadanah, Pramod Chakravarthy, B. R. Ishara, Ramesh Talwar, Basu Bhattacharya, Dasari Narayana Rao, Ravi Tandon, Umesh Mehra, Sohanlal Kanwar, Ramanand Sagar and Ismail Shroff.

With late Kamal Amrohi and Raj Kapoor his dream remained unfulfilled. Kamaal Amrohi’s Majnoon after songs was shelved and Satyam Shivam Sundaram went to Shashi Kapoor.

Many directors also made their directorial debut with Rajesh Khanna like Yash Chopra- Daag-A Poem of Love, Joy Mukherjee-Chhailla Babu, Danny-Phir Wahi Raat and Rishi Kapoor-Aa Ab Laut Chale. Filmmaker Narendra Bedi also wanted to make a movie with Rajesh Khanna as he knew Rajesh Khanna from Raaz’s days and had directed Kaka in Bandhan and Mahachor. In 1979, Bedi decided to become a producer and wanted to do a film tiled Bebus with Rajesh Khanna, but Kaka was extremely busy and finally he casted Sanjeev Kumar and Zaheera, but after working on some reels Narendra Bedi expired.

Prakash Mehra wanted to cast Rajesh Khanna in Jadugar in 1980’s, but there was no headway and after few years he made Jadugar with Amitabh Bachchan.

Ramsay Brothers too were keen to work with Rajesh Khanna and were working on Om in which Mandakini was doing a film with Kaka for the first time, but somehow the project couldn’t proceed further.
