Chapter 17: Iconic Dialogues

Rajesh Khanna’s dialogue delivery was soft and unique and some of his dialogues are still remembered like Amar Prem’s- Maine tumse kitni baar kaha Pushpa… mujhse yeh aanson nahin dekhe jaate…Pushpa I hate tears’. Initially, the screenplay and dialogues for Amar Prem were penned in English and Ramesh Pant translated the same in Hindi, but he liked the dialogue ‘Pushpa I hate tears so he kept it as it was in English and the rest is History.

Anand’s famous dialogues penned by Gulzar ’ Zindagi badi honi chahiye lambi nahin’ and Zindagi aur maut to uparwale ke haath hai jahanpanah…use na to aap badal sakte hai na mein…hum sab to rangmanch ki kathputliya hai… jinki dor uparwale ke haathon mein bandhi hai…kaun kab kaise uthega, yeh koi nahin janta’.

The wonderful dialogues of Rajesh Khanna in ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’ ‘Is Duniya mein do taangwaala jaanwar sabse khatarnak jaanwar hai’. The other best dialogue of the movie was ‘Ek aurat ki zindagi mein motor, banglay, dhan-daulat, in sab cheezon ki koi keemat nahin… use sirf ek accha pati chahiye jo use pyar kare..aur jiske kadmon mein woh apni duniya rakh de’. The dialogues of Haathi Mere Saathi were very well-written by Inder Raj Anand.

The dialogue writer of Roti was Akhtar-Ul-Iman, but director Manmohan Desai wanted some hard-hitting dialogues for the climax portion, so he was in search of an extremely good dialogue writer and his search was over when he met Kader Khan, who was a newcomer and Kader Khan accepted Desai’s challenge. Desai told him that if he doesn’t like the dialogues than he will tear the papers in front of him. Kader Khan wrote the dialogues and after reading the same, Manmohan Desai was so happy tht and he began to dance.

It is said for the dialogues of Roti, Rajesh Khanna who was the presenter of the film and Manmohan Desai paid Kader Khan big amount of 1 lakh as a remuneration which was very high in 70’s. The climax dialogues penned by Kader Khan for Rajesh Khanna when he is about to die at the end … ‘Bhagwan Insaan ko dil de, dimaag de, magar pet mat de, aur agar pet deta hai to use bhookh mat de, aur agar bhookh deta hai to use do waqt ki roti ka intezaam karke bhej, warne tujhe insaan ko paida karne ka koi haq nahin hai’.

A popular dialogue of Daag-A Poem of Love was very close to Kaka and whenever Rajesh Khanna was invited on stage for any award or function, he recited it. ‘Izzatein…Shohratein… chahatein…Ulfatein… koi bhi cheez iss duniya mein rehti nahin… ‘Aaj mein hoon jahan kal koi aur tha…yeh bhi ek daur hai… woh bhi ek daur tha’.

One of Maalik film’s dialogue, though the film was the 16th flop release of Rajesh Khanna after 15 solo hits. The dialogue spoken by Kaka was ‘Jo insaan kisi ka upkaar bhool jaye woh sabse bada paapi hai’…

The other dialogue of the movie was from Daag- A Poem of Love ‘Aap kya Jaane mujhko samajte hai kya…Main to kuch bhi nahin…Is kadar pyar, itni badi bheed ka rakhunga kahan… Is kadar pyar ke kaabil nahin…Mera dil meri jaa… Mujhko itni mohabbat na do doston…Soch lo dosto…Is kadar pyar kaise samalunga mein… mein to kuch bhi nahin’…

Namak Haram’s dialogue of Kaka… ‘Maine tera namak khaya hai…isliye teri nazar mein namak haram zaroor hoon…lekin jisne yeh namak banaya uski nazar mein nahi hoon’.

The other reason in Namak Haram was that Amitabh’s role was much more powerful than Rajesh Khanna, though he was playing a supporting character. Initially, in the climax, Amitabh Bachchan was supposed to die according to the script, but Rajesh Khanna asked for changes in the script and at the end he dies. Rajesh Khanna thought that the character which dies would win the hearts of the audience like in his earlier movies Aradhana, Anand, Andaz and Safar, but he was mistaken and Amitabh was benefited. No matter, how much an actor could be talented, but if his role is feeble, he cannot rise above the script and the same thing happened with Rajesh Khanna in Namak Haram.

Rajesh Khanna’s dialogues in Prem Nagar were also good like like ‘Agar koi ladki haa kahen to use chhodna nahin…aur agar naa kahe to use chhhuna nahin… chahe woh bazaar ki gudiya kyon na ho’… ‘Ek nanhi kali jo phool nahi bani abhi…maut par hass rahi hai aur dekiye woh phal jo pakk chuka hai…sad chukka hai… girne ke darr se, kis tarah kaaanp raha hai’, penned by Inder Raj Anand.

Kaka’s dialogue from Kudrat was very impressive when Raj Kumar slaps Rajesh Khanna and he answers ‘Ehsaan nahi bhula…apmaan bhi nahi bhulunga’.

The word Re…was very common in Rajesh Khanna’s dialogues which was first time spoken by him in Namak Haram and thereafter was heard in number of his movies.
