Chapter 12: Deewaar Controversy

The Deewaar story is very famous as initially it was heard that Rajesh Khanna was signed by producer Gulshan Rai and even director Yash Chopra’s first choice was Rajesh Khanna, but writer duo Salim Javed suggested Amitabh’s name as he would be best for the role of Vijay and were adamant about their decision. Finally, Khanna had to lose such a great film. Anyway, it’s all destiny game. Navin Nischol was also the first choice to play Ravi, but when new star cast was formed Shashi Kapoor was signed.

Though Rajesh Khanna would have also performed the character of Vijay very well, but for godown fight sequence Bachchan was an ideal choice. But yes, Rajesh Khanna could have excelled in Shashi Kapoor’s role because at some places Shashi Kapoor’s dialogues were more hard-hitting and powerful compared to Amitabh Bachchan like ‘Bhai Mujrim Ka Bhes badalkar bol raha Hai ‘Jab Tak Ek Bhai Bol Raha Hai, Ek Bhai Sun Raha Hai, Jab Ek Mujrim Bolega tab eK Police officer Sunega’. In this scene, Rajesh Khanna would have excelled as Ravi, but he should have been cast of an elder brother and Amitabh as a younger one as Vijay.

The other confrontation scene when Shashi Kapoors screams ‘Bhai tum sign karoge ya nahin’. Here there would be a blast on screen between these two actors and the best dialogue of the film ‘’Aaj Mere Paas Buildingein Hai, Bangle hai, Bank balance hai, Gadiyan Hai, kya Tumhare Paasi’ and Rajesh Khanna would have brought tears in his eyes with his engrossing expression and said in emotional voice, turning his neck ‘’Mere Paas Maa Hai’’ undoubtedly he would have won the heart of audience.

The last major scene and most difficult was Shiv Temple scene. Amitabh had worked very hard for this particular scene for hours and hours and Salim Javed dialogues were very effective. ‘Aaj Khush to Bahut Honge Tum….

If Rajesh Khanna would have been in Deewaar and performed the same scene as Vijay, then the dialogues would be in Khanna’s style…

‘Muskura raha hai… ‘Haa… apne bhakto ko dukh den eke alawa tune kiya hi kya hai’… Maine to socha tha, ki kabki bhi teri chaukhat par kadam nahin rakhunga, par tune aaj mujhe majboor kar diya hai re…’

‘Tu kaisa Bhagwan hai, jo apne bhakton ki sunta hi nahin’…

‘Tu kaisa Bhagwan hai, jise apne bhakton ke dukh-dard ka ehsaas hi nahin’.

‘Tu kaisa Bhagwan hai… Jo teri puja karta hai, tu usi se mooh mod leta hai’.

‘Tu kaisa bhagwan hai, Jo sirf zakhm dena jaanta hai, marham kabhi tune lagaya hi nahin’.

‘Tu sirf naam ka bhagwan hai’… Sirf patthar, jo chot pahuchane ke siwa kuch kar hi nahin sakta’… ‘Isliye to maine aaj tak tujhe kabhi bhagwan nahin mana, teri puja nahin ki’ ‘Tujhse kabhi kuch nahin maanga’.

‘Par aaj meri maa ki khatir tere darwaze pe aaya hoon re’… ‘Mere paapon ki sazaa, mein maa ko mat de, ‘Chahe to tu meri jaan le le, par meri maa ki jaan ko baksh de Bhagwan’.

Uss abhagan ne bahut dukh uthaye hai… Bas...ab aur uska imtihaan mat le Bhagwan’.

‘Suna hai tu bada dayalu hai, to uss dukhiyari par daya kar Bhagwan… daya kar… daya kar re’.

Deewaar had many emotional scenes and instead Shashi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna would be perfect choice as Ravi Verma. If both had worked together, film could have been a blockbuster. It would be a treat to watch superstar and mega star on silver screen, when the script was so powerful by Salim Javed. Deewaar was an intact script for both Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan.
