Haathon Mein Tera Haath: Q&A with author Suraj Rawat

Suraj hails from a village in Uttarakhand. He has completed his education in BCA. This is his first book, and he wants to dedicate it to his favourite person Mishtii. His poem is an effort taken to convey some of life’s messages.

Suraj believes we all eventually become fully ready to enter our unique worlds.  In our Q&A with the author, let’s walk through his life experiences…

What inspired you to choose poetry as your favourite mode of writing?

There is no special reason behind my writing. I just include the ups and downs of life in my poems. I have presented my life experiences in the form of memories, some good and some bad. I believe that it is better to keep good memories close to our hearts and remove the bad ones.

What is poetry to you?

Poetry is everything to me. There is a simple way to understand and explain life, which we are forgetting in this internet world. I still remember when we, as kids, used to read about how to make life simpler. Poetry is my way to do so.

What part of your day do you spend writing?

Most of my time is spent writing poetry and thinking. But because of spending so much time writing and spending less time outside the home, I have lost touch with many of my people. I like to write poetry and live in real life, unlike many others…

Can poems be based on real-life events?

Yes, of course. All my poems are based on real life, as it happens to me. I then put it in my own words to create a fine work.

How does your poetry fit in with poetry trends?

Traditional poems often rhyme, but rhyme is just one of the many structural elements that may be included. There are different poetic forms. Each type of traditional poetry has its own rules and structure. I believe my poem fits in right.

Does writing poetry need a certain mindset?

From my experience, yes. Until you have a certain topic, it will be difficult to write and understand. You have to first make up your mind about what you want to pen down. Foundation first!

Is writing poetry a privilege?

I do think it’s a privilege to write poems. Not everyone has the privilege, to just imagine things all the time. Of course, a lot of people are writing and they’re putting it in around the rest of their life, which may or may not be stressful on its own. You’re right. It is an absolute privilege.

Can you love a poem even if it interprets the bitter truth of life?

Yes, there are many of my poems that I like to read myself, one of which is Haatho Me Tera Hath Ho and Jana Kedarnath Ho. I love poetry – whether it spills the truth or is filled with imagination.

I like this specific poem also because I wrote it for that beautiful person in my life. In fact, all the poems in this book have been written keeping in mind the same reason.

But I regret that dreams are only dreams. Life’s truth is if you have crores of rupees, then love is for you. I speak a little bitter but this is the truth.

So, don’t fall in love yet. First, make a bank balance, after which you could make your dream come true.  I, from the bottom of my heart, thank 16Leaves for giving me a platform to express my feelings.
