Chapter 3: Four More Kids on the Island

I woke to the sound of screaming. I sat up straight and ran out of the cave. There were four boats, all separate and I was pretty sure the people on board couldn’t see each other. But the boats had one course: the island. Small problem though; all the boats were surrounded by Mr. Meg over there.

I couldn’t let these people die. I ran into the observatory and noticed a storage room. I ran in and pulled out four hooks. I attached them all to a tree on the shore.

I threw as far as I could for all of them. Bullseye, bullseye, bullseye aaaand missed.

“NO!” I yelled.

But the hook was already in the water. The girl on board looked determined and she dived into the water. She came up on the boat again and I saw her latch the hook to the boat.

“YES, YES, YES!!” I reeled in all the boats. The people on the boats collapsed on the shore. They were all kids and as far as I could see; they didn’t have parents with them.

“Ow,” moaned a blonde-haired girl with a slightly ripped blue shirt and green shorts. “Well. That was fun.”

I recognized the girl who had dived into the ocean. She had long blonde-brown hair and a tan. She was wearing a sweatshirt and jeans. The girl had an expression that suggested she was brave enough to jump off a building. There were two other guys. One was wearing jeans and a shirt that said Breh. The other one was wearing Bermuda shorts and a plain orange shirt. They both had brown hair. Guy number 2 said, “What just happened?”

“The Megalodon happened. It’s a long story.” I explained. I told them my name and all about what I did in the last day-and-a-quarter. Turns out the blonde-haired girl was called Beth, the ocean-diving-hook-hauler was called Demi. Breh-shirt was called Zac and Bermuda shorts dude was called Tom.

“So, this Megalodon? It suddenly just came back to life?” Demi asked.

“Hey, don’t look at ME. I have no idea what happened either,” I answered.

Beth turned a bit pale. “So uh, the observatory? That whole Martha Oakwood, statue…”

“Yeah,” I replied.

“Cool,” she squeaked.

“What—I, uh, what, um, I… Observatory? Megalodon? ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF LITERALLY NOWHERE?” Tom exploded.

I figured he might actually explode then come back to life as a really confused tomato.

Zac fidgeted with his fingers. “So, what do we do now?”

“I guess—survive,” I said, gesturing for them to follow me.

I led them to my cave and got some mangoes. I passed them around silently and thumped down.

Demi sighed. “So, we’re stuck here. Great. Just great.”

We stalked outside the cave, and I showed them the MTO Observatory. We were heading to the storage room when Zac said, “Where’s Beth?”

We ran upstairs and found room 3 open. I ran in. Beth was gaping at the photos on the wall. They all had a red-headed, beautiful woman in them.

“Beth?” I called.

She jumped, “Oh. Um, hi,” she said nervously. “How-how did you…?” I faltered.

“Oh uh, I just found a key lying around. WEIRD, right? So I-I just tried opening the door with it, and what’d ya know! It works!” I stared at her.

“Sure. That’s what’s weird,” said a voice behind me. I turned around and saw Demi staring at Beth too.

She tossed her hair and gently pulled me and Beth aside. She picked up shark blueprints and held them up. “Strangely obsessed with sharks enough to have them at her own memorial? Or just crazy?”

Beth looked at the blueprints as if they were her hope to get out of here. “Guys? Maybe we should get out of here. This place gives me the creeps,” called a voice I recognized as Zac’s.

We walked back to the cave. The sun was setting, and we were kind of tired. I got us some bananas and a few berries. Maybe we’d have more luck with the island tomorrow. But today? We were beat. I settled down and fell asleep immediately.
