The sound of your voice

Or what it was like to be held by you.

I wish I didn’t forget

The way you looked at me

When you told me you loved me.

I wish I would have known

That not remembering could occur

And that even memories

Of mothers seem to fade away

Creating “Once Upon a Time”

Stories in my head.

Maybe it’s because I was younger

And it feels like I have lived

Many lifetimes since then,

Or maybe it’s because I have fooled myself

Into feeling I am stronger

Than I actually am without you.

Whatever the reason

I know one thing for certain:

I should have paid more attention

To the sound of your voice,

The grace of the ‘I love you’ in your arms,

And the way I believed you when you said:

Everything is going to be just fine.
